ROSARY TWINE DYEING PROCESS

MANY OF OUR TWINE CUSTOMERS ENJOY THE CREATIVE FLEXIBILITY OF DYEING THE WHITE NYLON TWINE THEMSELVES. THERE SEEM TO BE TWO MAIN WAYS TO ACHIEVE DYED TWINE: RIT® DYE METHOD OR KOOL-AID METHOD. SPECIAL THANKS TO TWO OF OUR CUSTOMERS FOR SHARING THEIR SECRETS OF TWINE DYEING, AND TO THE MANY CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE BEEN WILLING TO SHARE THEIR VARIATIONS OF THE SAME METHODS!

RIT® DYE METHOD

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOX, OR VISIT www.ritdye.com FOR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS.

"Nylon is a synthetic material which dyes very easily and quickly. Special care must be taken to avoid using too much dye. For one pound of fabric  use:

  • 1 tablespoon Rit Powder dye or 1/4 cup of Rit Liquid dye

  • 3 gallons of hot water
        130° F - 140° F for light and medium colors
        150° F - 180° F for dark colors

  • Dyeing time:
10 - 15 minutes for light and medium colors
        20 - 30 minutes for dark colors"

VARIATIONS FOR DYEING THE TWINE FOR KNOTTED ROSARIES:

VARIATION 1)
DYE A WHOLE TUBE OF TWINE AT ONE TIME, FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. RINSE WITH COLD WATER FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. SET OUT TO DRY, PREFERABLY IN THE SUN, OR IN A WARM DRY AREA. DRYING THE TUBE OF TWINE CAN TAKE A DAY OR TWO. THE TWINE ON THE OUT SIDE OF THE TUBE WILL BE DARKER THAN ON THE INSIDE, BUT YOU GET A VARIEGATED OR MARBLE LOOK AS YOU GET FURTHER INTO THE TUBE.

VARIATION 2) PRE-CUT LENGTHS OF TWINE. BEFORE KNOTTING INTO ROSARY, DYE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ON BOX, RINSE USING COLD WATER, LAY OUT TO DRY COMPLETELY. STORE FOR LATER USE, KNOT INTO ROSARY THEN GIVE AWAY!

VARIATION 3) KNOT ROSARY USING WHITE TWINE. WHEN ROSARY IS COMPLETE, DYE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS, RINSE USING COLD WATER, LAY OUT TO DRY COMPLETELY. GIVE AWAY WHEN DRY!

VARIATION 4) WRAP PRE-CUT WHITE TWINE AROUND YOUR HAND LOOSELY. REMOVE FROM HAND. DIP HALF OF WRAP IN CHOSEN DYE FOR LENGTH OF TIME UNTIL DESIRED COLOR IS ACHIEVED. COLD WATER RINSE. THEN DIP OTHER END OF WRAP IN SAME DYE FOR HALF THE LENGTH OF TIME AS THE FIRST SIDE. REPEAT RINSE. THIS IS THE HAND DYED VARIEGATED METHOD.

VARIATION 5) HAND DIPPED TYE DYE! HERE ARE INSTRUCTIONS AS WRITTEN BY GREG WILLITS OF ROSARY ARMY:

Buy at least three different kinds of RIT® dye. I prefer the pre-made kind, but you can buy the powdered RIT® dye and make your own. WARNING: If you've never used dyes before, be careful, it can make a HUGE mess!

Make a white Rosary, complete with Crucifix.
Wrap the completed Rosary around your hand several times. Remove the wrapped Rosary and then tighten the bundle together with some scrap twine. Wrapping it like this will make it easier to dip the twine into the dyes.

You might want to wrap your Crucifix in plastic wrap to keep it clean (though you can usually wipe excess dye off the metal pretty easily)

Make sure the dye is very hot (but not boiling). This will help it set in the twine and won't bleed onto your fingers as much later on.

Put on some latex or rubber gloves (unless you don't mind techno-colored hands for a few days.

With the dyes in three separate containers, dip first one end, then the end with the Crucifix, then (I use an eyedropper for this part), pour some dye on the middle section of your bundle.

Unwrap the bundle as soon as you finish dying it, and hang it to dry somewhere where the dye won't rub off onto anything (like a wall).

Let it dry, preferably someplace warm and dry, for at least 24 hours. Sometimes I'll place dyed Rosaries on a drying rack in the clothes dryer to speed things up or out in the sun on a clear day.

KOOL-AID® METHOD

STOVE TOP METHOD:

  • Fill the pot with enough warm water so that the twine will float

  • Stir in the "Kool-Aid" until it is dissolved

  • Add the twine and stir gently

  • Put the pot on the stove and heat until the water is just below a simmer

  • Turn down the heat so that the pot doesn't boil and keep the pot on the stove for 30 minutes. Stir gently from time to time.

  • When 30 minutes are up remove the pot from the stove and let it cool until the twine can be handled.

  • Rinse with cold water until water runs clear.

  • Gently squeeze the excess water from the twine. Hang it somewhere out of the way to dry - and enjoy your new color! Click here to see sample color chart.

MICROWAVE METHOD:

FIRST, PRE-SOAK CUT LENGTHS OF TWINE IN WARM WATER FOR 5 MINUTES.

COMBINE 1 PACKAGE OF KOOL-AID® AND 2 CUPS OF HOT WATER INTO A MASON JAR. STIR WELL. PUT TWO TO FOUR LENGTHS OF THE PRE-SOAKED TWINE INTO THE JAR. MAKE SURE ALL TWINE IS COVERED IN THE KOOL-AID MIX.

MICROWAVE ON HIGH 1-2 MINUTES. WATCH CAREFULLY AS THE BOILING KOOL-AID® MAY BOIL OVER. STOP MICROWAVE JUST BEFORE THIS HAPPENS. LET SIT FOR TWO MINUTES, AND REPEAT ON HIGH 1-2 MINUTES. STIR OCCASIONALLY. DO THIS COOK/SIT PROCESS UNTIL DESIRED COLOR IS ACHIEVED.

REMOVE USING HOT PADS AS JAR IS HOT! CAREFULLY REMOVE TWINE FROM JAR AND RINSE IN COLD WATER FOR 5 MINUTES. HANG TO DRY. STORE UNTIL READY TO USE!
